on "paddles" (or lead I, II, or III if monitor leads are used).</P>

conductor pads on patient's chest.</P>

<P><B><FONT COLOR="#ffff3f">5.</FONT></B> Position paddles or remote defibrillation
pads on patient (sternum-apex).</P>

<P><B><FONT COLOR="#ffff3f">6.</FONT></B> Visually check the monitor display
and assess the rhythm. (Subsequent steps assume VF/VT is present.)</P>

<B><FONT COLOR="#ffffff">"Charging defibrillatorstand clear!"</FONT></B></P>

on apex paddle (right hand) or defibrillator controls.</P>

charged, state firmly in a forceful voice the following chant (or some suitable
equivalent) before each shock:</P>

clear."</FONT></B><FONT COLOR="#ffffff"> (Check to make sure you are
clear of contact with the patient, the stretcher, and the equipment.)</FONT>
<LI><B><FONT COLOR="#bafddc">"Two, you're clear."</FONT></B><FONT
COLOR="#ffffff"> (Make a visual check to ensure that no one continues
to touch the patient or stretcher. In particular, do not forget about the
person performing ventilations. That person's hands should not be touching
the ventilatory adjuncts, including the endotracheal tube!)</FONT>
<LI><B><FONT COLOR="#bafddc">"Three, everybody's clear."</FONT></B><FONT
COLOR="#ffffff"> (Check yourself one more time before pressing the "shock"
buttons.)</FONT>

<P><B><FONT COLOR="#ffff3f">10.</FONT></B> Apply 25 lb pressure on both
paddles.</P>

buttons simultaneously.</P>

VF/VT remains, recharge the defibrillator at once. Check a pulse if there
is any question about the rhythm display (eg, a lead has been dislodged
or the paddles are not displaying the correct signal).</P>

360 J, repeating the same verbal statements noted in step 9.</TD></TR>

interposed CPR or pulse checks. After a set of 3 shocks, provide 1 minute
